After watching the disturbing Food, Inc. documentary, I made a mental note to change the way I eat. Nope, I'm not turning Vegan or Vegetarian because that's just too much pressure on me. But I vow to make more informed choices, and I will elect to consume more wholesome and nutritionally-dense food whenever I can. Shocking as the movie was, I believe there is a grain of truth (pun intended) in the issues raised.
So I am saying bye-bye to purchasing artery-clogging items like this $20 luscious and creamy fresh-churned Beurre d'Isigny Ste-Mère butter from France that I slather on my refined-wheat baguette. Instead, I'll stick to olive oil or Vegan butter and whole grain bread.
Just in time for the switch, I recently added these titles to my cookbook collection, hoping to go through the recipes one by one.
Some of the recipes that I am eager to try starting today are:
From Tal Ronnen, the Conscious Cook
From Fresh Restaurant in Toronto
Dragon Bowl with Tofu Steak, Vegetables, and Miso Gravy on Brown Rice...
Vegetarian Burger with Spicy House Mayo...
And some fruit elixirs that can detox the body and combat harmful free-radicals.
Lung Lover Immune Elixir with ginger root, red apples, cayenne pepper and licorice root...
Supersonic Energy Elixir with mango juice, blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries...
Liver Flush Immune Elixir with ginger root, beets, lemon, and pink grapefruit...
It's going to be difficult cutting down or giving up my beloved pastries and favourite restaurant food. However, I concluded that, with the strength of my will and the courage of my heart, I can find a balance "in moderation". So, here's to good and clean living in the new year. No pressure.

I love the look of "the Conscious Cook"!
I have tried to switch to a lighter and healthier cooking, but i tend to forget about it after a while... The simple Japanese cooking is the best I know but sometimes it's not really satisfying. hmmmm. I will see if I can get this book at least! Thanks :)
Great photos! I love the sound of the old bay tofu cakes, yummy. Looking forward to seeing your versions of them.
"the conscious cook" sounds like the perfect book for the "repentant" cook. :P
Yikes darling, I have not read that but will the moment I sign off. I'm with you, I do just about anything for better, cleaner food for our family. Thanks for the heads up and the read!
I'm a HUGE proponent of eating clean and healthy! You will be so glad you made this change - it will take a few weeks, but you will feel so much better!
The dishes you shared....left me wiping drool off my chin!
I love the photos from The Conscious Cook. Hope the recipes are as good as they look. Most people have this misconception that healthy food is bland, my hubby and kids included.
After feeding them organic red rice for half a year, my MIL had to practically beg me to switch back to white rice. This after my little boy almost ate three cupfuls of white rice during a short stay with her. Tsk!
Good luck and I hope you find success where I miserably failed. :) But at least I can say that I tried. :)
I bought my wife (Kathryn) Tal Ronnen's "The Conscious Cook" for Christmas — it was on her list. So far she's made us asparagus soup (with cashew cream) and a vegan 'chicken' dish with capers. Both got an A+!
I should definitely follow your lead...I always feel so much better inside and out when I eat healthy. Here's to a VERY happy and very healthy new year! It's been so lovely getting to know you this year. You are beautiful and so full of grace. May 2010 bring only the best for you and your family!
I have "Food Inc" on my Netflix...I can't wait to see it. I'll be making my boyfriend watch it with me, since he's a fast food junkie and I'm hoping to wean us off the bad stuff :) So thanks for the review! Happy New Year Jen!! xo
Cheers to eating well! Happy new year too...
